26/09/2018 - ACM Code of Ethics
The Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) is the oldest professional computing organisation with over 100,000 international members. Research conducted by Flick at DMU in collaboration with the ACM’s Committee on Professional Ethics informed the rewriting of the ACM’s Code of Ethics, a mandatory obligation for its members to follow. The Code is considered significant and relevant enough in the field that it has also been adopted by other professional organisations such as International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP).
With professional organisation members publicly upheld to the Code, it has been used as a benchmark for judging emerging technologies in terms of their ethical compliance, and to publicly challenge technologies that might be ethically problematic.

The ETHICOMP conference series was launched in 1995 by the Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility (CCSR). The purpose of this series is to provide an inclusive forum for discussing the ethical and social issues associated with the development and application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Conferences are held every 12-18 months taking place in various locations around the world, bringing together delegates and speakers from all continents. More than 800 papers have been presented since its launch in 1995.
Team: Simon Rogerson started the conference in 1995 and ran it until 2011; Bernd Stahl and Catherine Flick have been chairs of the Steering Committee since 2011.
